Vaginal Births

Many women go on to have perfectly safe & non-tearing vaginal births after tearing.

There are steps you can take to help minimise the risk of re-tearing. Some are highlighted by RCOG below:

  • birthing upright, laying on your side or on all fours. Not laying on your back.

  • avoiding instrumental delivery (opt for a low-threshold for emergency section)

  • pushing when you feel your body wants to

  • practicing perineal massage from 37 weeks

These points above cannot always be abided to, due to emergency situations eg. the baby is in distress.

Some women decide to hire a doula if they feel they need or want extra emotional support during labour.
