Many women go on to have perfectly safe & non-tearing vaginal births after tearing.
There are steps you can take to help minimise the risk of re-tearing. Some are highlighted by RCOG below:
birthing upright, laying on your side or on all fours. Not laying on your back.
avoiding instrumental delivery (opt for a low-threshold for emergency section)
pushing when you feel your body wants to
practicing perineal massage from 37 weeks
These points above cannot always be abided to, due to emergency situations eg. the baby is in distress.
Some women decide to hire a doula if they feel they need or want extra emotional support during labour.
